I have been wondering about this lately and doing a little research online, I have a old useless computer that is outdated and lacks necessity. Would it be possible to use it to make your own small/personal web server to host your own files and websites? I have seen a lot of stories and documentation about this online and even seen this site, http://www.diywebserver.com/, it seems simple and apparently free/cheap. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't all a server is, is a simple computer with a large storage capacity linked to the web for others to view. I thought if it's not difficult and someone with relatively good knowledge with a computer could make one with there older computer. Just out to ask if anyone here has knowledge/opinion on this matter.

Just throwing it out there, Thanks for listening

Theoretically, any computer can be a server. A server IS a computer. The only thing different about a server is that they generally have higher storage capabilities and exclusively serve the web/LAN. If you have the right software for it, you could set it up easily. wink.gif

I recommend Ubuntu 6.06 LTS with lightTPD, php5 and mysql5.

What are the price ranges for the software? Do you have links to tutorials or such to assist in setting up a server?

Small update, did research on my ISP, apparently I't against the Terms Of Service to create a personal server... "use or run dedicated, stand-alone equipment or servers from the Premises that provide network content or any other services to anyone outside of your Premises local area network ("Premises LAN"), also commonly referred to as public services or servers. Examples of prohibited equipment and servers include, but are not limited to, e-mail, Web hosting, file sharing, and proxy services and servers" And if I try they will shut my service off.

I doubt they'd notice, to be honest.

That is true, I don't plan on hosting a large website or have live streaming media or anything, Bandwidth usage would be minimal. But I was also reading around and found out that many ISP block port 80 and read that this port would need to be unblocked, I have too see if mine does or not.

Honestly, Home web servers are a waste of time.

I've had many experiences with this sort of thing in the past, and there are no benefits at all. Getting proper shared hosting is faster, better on the environment as well as being bad on electricity costs
