I think the death penalty is wrong, if you think about it, it's like letting them get off easy. Life in prison or solitary confinement would be much worse the the death penalty. And it has been shown that all the fee's and cost you need for a lawyers and such to get someone the death penalty usually cost more then it would just too keep them in jail.

I don't like the death penalty because a lot of people consider it to be a cruel and unusual punishment. Most prison guards whole administer the lethal concoction don't even know where to properly inject the prisoner. If they put it in the wrong place, the prisoner suffers a very painfull death. But if they put it in the right place, the death comes faster but the prisoner will still feel a lot of pain. I think that just keeping them locked up would be the least expensive thing and the worst posible Constitutionaly viable punishment.

I don't think it is an effective punishment, but I have to comment on this:

Too f*cking right it's cruel, and the scum who receive it don't deserve sympathy. Criminals in general don't deserve sympathy, if they break the law they're gonna get hit by the state and that's how it should be. The solution is not to commit crimes, simple as. Also, some criminals will see prisons as a haven. Think about it: free food, healthcare, place to socialise and a roof over their head. For serious crimes, we need good ole' hung, drawn and quartered punishment.

This is seriously weird, this was the topic in my Religious Education lesson...

Totally agree on the free food / accomodation / healthcare etc, its not fair that criminals get locked up and live a free life.

That's what solitary confinement is for, there won't be free time, theres no socializing, Many stories of people going insane after years of seeing no humans... And we all have seen the movie 'The Green Mile'... (or maybe not) where it deals with the death penalty and the scene with the electric chair malfunction.

Hmm. This is an interesting one.

I never quite know where to stand with the death penalty. In its favour, as mentioned above, prison is almost like a hotel for some prisoners, and they're costing the state hundreds of thousands a year. However, there is the very strong argument that, morally, the death penalty brings the government down to the murderer's (or rapist's etc) level. Ghandi put it well: "An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind."

Yeah, but a lot of people think that's how the death penalty is in reality. And then the other movie "Dead Man Walking" we watched in school, it's a bit more realistic and deals with lethal injection. And also makes you question the death penalty.

And I'll bump in with another similar question, what so you think about abortion? Personally I think it's wrong as well.

Ok, with the amount of prisoners that have commited serious crimes you can't possibly lock every single one of them up in solitary confinement, it isn't logisitcaly plausible. Back on normal prison confinement many criminals are repeat offenders, they just leave prisoner and go back to criminal activities, most criminals see a prison stretch as a badge of honour. If those said prisoners are dead they can't offend again, and how can you complain that the lethal injection causes the victim pain? Imagine the pain they put their victims through, and the victim's family and friends. How would you feel if someone murdered your relative/friend and got a life of free food, healthcare and a roof over their heads?

Completely agree, its crossed the line of ridiculous now, its amazing he mass of people in jails, serious crimes should live up to what they have done, rather than making all these massive debates over no room..

I think that they sentence is far, but maybe not directly first time offense, unless it is something completely sick? So multi-times or with a record should just face the consequences, not some metal bars at night..

okay,
imagine, you are a suspackt in a murder case, you did not have done anything, but the jugdes say: your guilty and you get the death penalty

i think you prefer jail above being death, the point is you can't make death peaple back alive if they aren't the murder....

But sometimes its crazy, here in holland you can get a few months of jail when you ?raped? (i dont know the word)
someone, but when you buy fireworks in beligium that are ilegal you get a higher punishment cursing.gif

Here is the United States, The states decide about the death penalty. Most states have banned it. I think its kind of harsh. Thats what they used to do in the olden days.

Not entirely true. I'm pretty sure being dead is better than being tortured, for example.
