I have a lot of music in my iTunes home page but they all inaccesible somewhere else. You can only listen to them in the iTunes section.

Is there a way to convert them so I can use them in the game or make mixes in Vegas?

After all, I have paid for the songs, shouldn't I have that option?

Tracks you've bought are encoded and can only be played in iTunes and on your iPod.

This is why I still buy CDs.

Digital Rights Management is the devil.gif. It limits consumer choice on what they want to do with what they legally purchased. There are ways around it, but I don't know if they are legal or not.

Maybe if you buy them its OK to download them off file sharing sites? You legally own the song... sad.gif

I don't know.. you can use a Copied version of XP if you have the license...

Filesharing is still illegal, even if you have previously purchased the songs thumbdown.gif.

Probably the most legal way is to burn the songs to CD with iTunes and then re-rip them into whatever format you want. iTunes still allows you to make CDs with the music you purchased, right? Time consuming, but it gets rid of the DRM (at least, it used to) and then you can make custom mixes with them. I haven't used iTunes in quite a while, so I don't know what it still allows and what it doesn't. Make sure you don't delete the AAC files you purchased or you won't be able to play them on your iPod.

Um?

As long as you don't buy digital tracks, what's the problem?

A few options:

>Burn the songs to a CD, re-rip in whatever format you want. (as stated)

>Purchase songs with the "iTunes Plus" label. Which are the same songs, higher quality and DRM free. Not yet available for all songs because of the recording companies being pissy and such.

>Get your songs from Amazon.com's MP3 store which can be used on any device and are DRM free.

>Or you can be sneaky and search for a DRM Ripper, illegal... Just use a CD-RW disc and you shouldn't have to resort to that method.

You can't use an iPod with anything other than iTunes, right?

Yes. A whole lot easier than WMP and other programs I've seen. I highly suggest you give iTunes a shot, it's great biggrin.gif

iTunes is amazing
I don't see why WMP even tried the whole music library thing when they knew iTunes was on the prowl... tongue.gif

You should definitely give it a try.

i wonder if nero can burn itunes tracks to CD, that way you could burn them to an image rather than a CD then rip em from the image, be quicker too as it can run at hdd speeds rather than CD drive speeds, just putting that option out there also

Erm...
WMP7, which had a media library, was released in 2000, a year before the release of the first version of iTunes.

I have given iTunes several tries now, and I just can't get used to it. It's way more library-oriented than other players - you can't even open a file without adding it to your library first. The interface is nasty (and there are fewer skins available than for WMP) and I find the WMP library much easier to use.

Problem is, I'm on the prowl for a new mp3 player - my old 1GB Samsung can't hold anywhere near enough songs any more. I did look at the iPod and dismissed it because of its incompatibility, and the fact that the smallest sized classic version was 80GB, way too big for my needs. The unfortunate thing is, having checked out the competition, there didn't seem to be an equivalent 30GB player with a low enough price; the iPod, it seems, is pretty good value. I needed an iPod, but didn't want iTunes. I was stuck...

...until this morning, when I found out that the latest version of Winamp works with the iPod, and is way more functional than iTunes as a media player. There's also a WMP11 skin available, so I can have all the functionality and looks of WMP with the compatibility of iTunes. So now I'm definitely considering an 80GB classic. smile.gif

Edit: It seems Apple have actually encrypted the iPod's song database file deliberately in the 6G models - they're simply trying to lock out their competitors. thumbdown.gif
